The iconic looks that came to be during this decade are astonishing. The contemporaries during this time commented the icons that presented itself during this time were the worst. Little did these contemporary “critics” knew, that these fashion icons would be well spoken in the future as events of absolute manic inventions & creative achievements that defined the decade.
Grunge & Retro Fashion, The decade of minimalism. During the ’90s grunge style clothing were often over sized, baggy & torn with dark and subdued colors. Sure the monochromatic looks were also sort of a thing during the decade but grunge and retro were the front runners. The monochromatic Fashion endeavors were uniquely appealing to a certain over the top imaginative group of people. Retro mixed new modern clothes with items from previous decades such as knitted cardigans with cargo pants. The wide shouldered and overly frilled dresses of the ’80s were replaced with neat & slim fitting clothing in the 1990s. This also heavily influenced office wear to go extremely casual thus diminishing that uptight olden days office look of baggy suits. For example, combining a tailored skirt with stretch fabric top & a smart jacket.
Body decorations such as tattoos & body art became the voice to some people who wanted their unforgettable memories and most precious of bits of their lives to remain forever with them and their body was how they presented it to the world. The tattoos one might carry would hold so many meanings therefore no man should ever be quick to judge the art one might carry in theirs. Thus also another iconic look of the decade came to be. Rock music was also a cornerstone to the people who were imbibed in these artistic endeavors if you will. It was their muse. It also paved it’s way to creating revolutionary trends of fashion.
The Rachel Look & Gwen Stefanie’s “No doubt era” Look were iconic looks that had a massive impact on people especially the contemporary youth of this decade. The hairstyle and the overalls of the popular actress Jennifer Aniston wore in “Friends” became a massive fashion trend and everyone had to wear look like her and wear the same clothing, the character Rachael Green became very iconic and almost all the women who watched the hit show during this decade followed her looks. The rock star, Gwen Stefanie started a new trend of fashion with her unique set of clothes she wore during her concerts. The crop top, Hammer pants and dark red lipstick were the absolute bomb and the fans loved it!
The sportswear craze, Doc Martens & platform shoes. Iconic sporty looks derived from sports became a bang on trend. For example the “Nike Air Jordans” the sporty basketball inspired shoes became a hit item and it became a revered must- have item. The Doc Martens replaced usual athletic footwear whereas platform shoes inspired from the famous Spice Girls’ fashion was the footwear trend of the decade.
