Fashion Influences

With the rapid globalization and evolution of technology at fast track, cable networks, satellite television and the world wide internet became available worldwide. So the exposure received by these media played a critical role in reforming people’s contemporary mindset from the ’80s to producing a completely new perspective. People all around the world could connect with each other and be exposed to various cultures & traditions as well. This made the possibilities of connecting with each other from two distant points of the world even more so reachable than it has ever been. This caused new trends to quickly spread around the whole world. Western people were inspired by the Asian cultures such as Japanese culture and Chinese culture while Eastern people were inspired by the Western cultures such as the American culture, British culture & European cultures. Thus with such massive exposure, people were relentless in experimenting with new things out of their comfort zones. This experimenting broadened its horizons to the world of fashion during the 1990’s and the possibilities of giving birth to a new creation was infinite.

The music scene was on absolute full throttle. Alternative Rock music during this decade caused a huge stir among the young generation. Bands like Nirvana. Rolling Stones. Blink-182, Green Day & Rage Against the Machine were the center of attention and the younger generation were inspired by their torn jeans, metal chains and punk looks. Their music even more revolutionary as the masterpieces created by these bands turned out to be absolutely timeless. Lyrics of such songs were quoted on various clothing & you could bear witness to this phenomena on the streets during this era. The songs; the lyrics of these songs to be precise, were the voice that spoke for the constricted youth that rebelled to get out of their unspoken rules of decorum from an era long past that bound them to their shells. Their clothing became a media to represent and express their rebellion. This presents that fashion during the 1990’s were not just a crazed phenomena to occur out of sheer rebellion neither of pure experimentation imbibed with crazy. It was simply the result of people being more open- minded & beaming with more creative endeavors exposed to such a vast world of impossibilities reckoning to be made possibilities.

The rap and hip-hop culture influenced the younger generation into wearing baseball caps and baseball jackets, Extra-baggy trousers, worn low on the waist to reveal brand-name boxer shorts. Spice girls and the Backstreet Boys were also quite popular & was the talk of the town among the young folk from all around the world. Their music gave them new life in the coming century.

Several outdoor sports started influencing people into wearing unique sportswear inspired fashion looks. This also marked a special milestone for the fashion influences that spread global wide during the 1990’s.
