The 1990s

The 90’s were an absolute manic decade for the whole of the world. Much experimentation was happening in all spheres of life & it looked outlandish to the common folk. In Politics, economics, social affairs, gender identity, family structures but especially technology & fashion; the changes & alterations from the usual decorum that took place in these sectors were certainly mind boggling as well as quite noteworthy. Some of the preposterous ideas that took off during this time are still immortal to this day as quite a few of them deemed absolutely time- less & impactful. The sea of possibilities that spontaneously came to be during this decade still keeps some of us dizzy even to this day.

According to my point of view with all that I’ve gathered, the idea of “Bat- shit Crazy” was re-invented in a new light during this decade. The music was revolutionizing; Fashion was iconic & influential. People were even more quirky & eccentric. The “TV” came to be worshiped. The idolizing over “idols” or “celebrities” came to be a thing. Among this vast ocean of changes also came the downsides of it. Drugs came to be a symbol of rebellion.  Which was a naïve & a completely unwise symbolization to spread around especially among the youth. This caused the “rebel, grunge & gangsta” themes to be popularized which resulted in glam- rock being left behind, alternate rock to re-surface, the forth coming of the gangsta rap, new beginning for boy bands [backstreet boys] & girl bands [The Spice Girls] with cool, cutesy vibes.

Influenced by all these changes that took place, the sphere of fashion went through a remarkable, noteworthy alteration as well. Donatella Versace quotes “The early ‘90s were an especially marvelous period for fashion, because it was the peak of glamour and there were no limits as to what you could do”. No wonder the “Bondage” Collection was a hit during this time which idolized fetish wear. Says quite a lot about how manic the ‘90s were, which was exactly why these eccentricities are still spoken to this day and age; re-invented over and over again. But of course how can we forget, this was also the decade that gave birth to “The Big Five”.  Which were the 5 original supermodels of the fashion world. Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer were the front runners for prominent fashion brands’ cat walks during this era. These ladies still defines what being a real “Supermodel” is even to this day.
